GCP Backs Occupational License Review, Anti-Predatory Business Claim Legislation

As “lame duck” session kicks into high gear in Columbus, the Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) is advocating on behalf of the Northeast Ohio business community on various fronts.  Among the many initiatives being considered, before the 132nd Ohio General Assembly breaks by the end of the year, are two separate bills GCP presented proponent testimony on last week.

The first would offer a regular review of Ohio occupational licensing boards and regulations and another responds to the issue of individuals filing predatory claims against businesses for technical violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

SB 255 would require the legislature to review occupational licensing boards regarding their sunset and the non-partisan Legislative Service Commission could perform assessments of occupational licensing bills and state regulation of occupations.  Licensing in Ohio has resulted in business people spending hundreds, in some cases, thousands of dollars to earn a license to begin their career.  This can be damaging – particularly for small businesses – for entry into the market and competition.  Click here to read GCP’s testimony on SB 255.

HB 271 seeks to protect its original intent, which is to provide ADA accessible facilities.  GCP unequivocally supports the ADA’s mission and charge.  In addition, this legislation strives to prevent abuse of the ADA, particularly in instances where demand letters are sent to businesses for minor and unnoticeable violations of the act.  Click here for our full statement on HB 271.

Opportunity Corridor Phase 2

The Opportunity Corridor – a $330 million boulevard currently under construction on the City of Cleveland’s east side – hit a significant milestone last Thursday with the official ribbon cutting and opening of the second phase of the project.  The $35 million Section 2 connects the southern end of E. 105th Street near Quincy Avenue to a new four-way intersection at E. 93rd Street just north of Woodland Avenue.  Though only a modest stretch of roadway, the complex project – led by the prime contractor Great Lakes Construction Company under the management of the Ohio Department of Transportation – involved the reconstruction of the E. 105th Street bridge over the RTA Red Line tracks, an extended platform and new head-house for RTA’s E. 105th/Quincy Rapid Station, new utility installation, and substantial land remediation efforts.

When completed in 2022, the three-mile boulevard will connect to the regional Interstate system from University Circle, where an estimated 80,000 Greater Clevelanders work and more than $14 billion in direct and indirect economic impact is generated annually.  More importantly, the project will provide enhanced access to several hundred acres of vacant and underutilized land and create the foundation for job creation and reinvestment in several east side neighborhoods.

Tri-C Summer Internship Program Job Description Due Tomorrow

The GCP's Internship Central program is again collaborating with Tri-C to offer GCP members the opportunity to participate as an internship host employer for Tri-C’s 4th annual Summer Internship Program.

There are 70 internship host opportunities available and employers can host one or two interns. The program is 5 to 10 weeks (maximum of 100 hours to be worked) from May 29 to August 9, 2019.
